Let's get real for a minute. This world is noisy. With so much vying for our attention, and so many others already pushing out content, you might be wondering, "Should I even bother creating a personal brand in climate tech?".
Short answer? Absolutely. Let me tell you why.
My Journey into the Climate Tech World
Two years ago, I was like many of you—eco-anxious, eager to drive positive change, but lost in the din of opinions. So, I started my journey: first through investing in the space, then experimenting things out on social media (LinkedIn, Twitter… even TikTok), launching a podcast, and curating this newsletter. At first, I felt like a tiny drop in an ocean, but then something magical happened.
People began to listen. Connect. Engage. It wasn’t because I was shouting louder, but because I was genuine, authentic, and shared transformative ideas.
Why You Should Care
We're in the midst of a pivotal era, where our decisions as a society will shape the planet for generations to come. Climate tech isn't just another industry; it's our chance to create a sustainable future. And every voice matters, including yours.
Tips to Build Your Brand in Climate Tech
Be Authentic: This isn't just a buzzword. Speak from the heart, be honest and take risks. There’s a lot of folks out there that will resonate with your message.
Narrow Your Focus: Climate tech is vast. Maybe you're interested in the built environment, or perhaps sustainable farming is more to your liking. Dive deep and become an expert in that space. Analisa Winther, who I had on the show, specializes in FoodTech. It's her passion and obsession, and running a podcast on the future of food doesn't feel like work to her.
Engage with the Community: Join communities such as Global Shapers, Young VCs, and Voyagers. Attend conferences like Hack Summit, The Drop, and ChangeNow, or participate in hackathons. Spread the word on LinkedIn and see what doors open up when you take the first step and communicate what you do.
Consistency is Key: Whether it's your podcast, newsletter, or social media, keep showing up. Regular updates help to establish trust. It may feel like a grind and require hours of effort, but it will pay off.
For me, it wasn't until I started being a lot more consistent with my newsletter posts that traffic seriously picked up.
I observed a similar trend on YouTube. Initially, my podcast interviews took 10 hours of my time and barely generated 100 views... You need to find another source of motivation to continue.
But I kept showing up, and eventually reached an inflection point.
Collaborate: Partner with others in your niche. Guest posts, joint podcasts, or co-hosted webinars can amplify your reach. I have co-written several deep-dive articles, such as the one on SMRs, with Colin Rebel and plan to continue doing so in the future.
In Conclusion
Amidst all the noise, it's easy to feel insignificant. But remember, in the grand scheme of things, every voice has the potential to create ripples. Our planet needs champions, and your brand in climate tech could be the beacon that guides others.
Take that leap, find your space in this bustling world, and contribute to the beautiful tapestry of climate tech. 🌍
