At a time when we desperately need fresh new ideas to get the rest of humanity onboard with the climate fight, it's refreshing to revisit some classics.
In this quick three-minute video, Derek Sivers breaks down the sequence of events that lead to starting a successful movement.
It's amazing that this video is already 13 years old, but its wisdom still holds up today.
To start a movement, the leader must have the courage to stand out, make their actions easy to imitate, fun to follow, and attract attention.
When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the courage to follow and show others how to do the same.
If you discover something cool that only a few people are doing, get some friends and join in.
If you need followers, help the first fan be a starter and shine a spotlight on them. Encourage the second fan to join the first, and make sure they do almost exactly the same thing so others can easily follow suit.
Give a few early adopters the courage to jump in together and make sure they stick together as a group.
Focus on publicizing the group, not yourself. Make it fun for others to join.
Make sure all late adopters can see the fun the early adopters are having.
Lessons to take away from this:
Step 1: To start a movement, have the courage to stand out and be easy to follow.
Step 2: When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the courage to follow them.
Step 3: if you discover something cool that few people are doing, get your friends or colleagues and join in.
Step 4: If you need followers, help the first fan and encourage the second fan to join.
Step 5: Make sure early adopters stick together and make it fun for others to join.
Step 6: Publicize the group, not yourself.
I leave it up to you to apply these learnings to your area of the climate world!
Let's support each other in building impactful movements! 💪
