COP conferences, have been held annually since 1995 to assess progress in dealing with climate change.
And what have 30 years of Climate Conferences actually achieved?
Here is a reality check:
Truth be told, there has been a reverse correlation between the number of COP conferences about climate change, government announcements, and the emissions that have been emitted over the last decades.
Since the βhistoricalβ COP 21 in Paris, the level of CO2 in the atmosphere has soared from approximately 400 ppm in 2015 to about 414 ppm in 2022.
Itβs a glaring testament to the divergence between international commitments and tangible actions on the ground.
The reality is shocking. What's worse, it all seems to accelerate ever since COP 21:
What purpose do those conferences actually serve then?
There's another side to the story. Look at the explosion of participants at those COP events. More and more people care.
This increased interest hasn't yet resulted in a swarm of positive reforms but thereβs an army of us waiting for a significant shift towards sustainability.
How long will we continue to tolerate the current lack of progress?
It is highly probable that a profound shift will only occur after a series of catastrophes on the scale of COVID-19.
We could argue that we are currently laying the groundwork in preparation for a major push once the world is TRULY ready for profound transformations.
So, what can we do now?
One of the most potent driving forces in steering our society towards a sustainable future is the conscientious commitment of personal capital π°
When we, as individuals, choose to invest our resources into sustainable ventures, eco-friendly initiatives, and green innovations, we are not just voicing our values but are actively shaping the market and influencing societal norms.
By directing our capital towards ethical and environmentally responsible choices, we become architects of change, enabling the creation of a sustainable economic landscape and propelling new narratives that will take the world by storm once the majority is ready for it.
Conclusion
While COP conferences play an important role in setting targets and creating frameworks, they alone are insufficient to drive significant progress.
It is crucial for individuals to take action by promoting new narratives and investing their own resources as the primary driving force for sustainable change.
