why AI took over the world and climate didn’t...
Silicon Valley built a religion. we built a warning sign
Read time: 5 min
Silicon Valley didn’t just build AI.
They built a story.
One so sticky, so seductive, that it swallowed up the narrative space everywhere, from boardrooms, to Davos stages and WhatsApp family chats.
That story didn’t need to be fully true (like many others before).
It just needed to feel true.
Here’s what they nailed, and what the climate world urgently needs to steal.
1. The arms race
"If we don’t build it, others will."
AI isn’t just a new tech. It’s a new battleground.
The narrative is geopolitical, existential, corporate.
If your government doesn’t invest, China will win.
If your company doesn’t integrate AI, you’ll lose.
If your startup doesn’t have a ChatGPT plug-in, good luck raising.
It’s FOMO at a global scale.
And FOMO moves money.
2. The existential risk
"We must align it. Or we die."
What a stroke of genius.
They made themselves the saviors and the threat.
“We’re building the beast… but we’re also the only ones who can contain it.”
The result?
More funding. More headlines. More control.
All under the noble banner of “AI safety.”
3. The Messiah narrative
"AI will fix everything."
Poverty? Fixed.
Cancer? Solved.
Carbon capture? Oh yeah, AI’s got that too.
It’s techno-utopia in a box.
A universal solution, just smart enough to believe in.
Is it real? Doesn’t matter.
Hope is a hell of a sales tool.
Meanwhile in climate?
We gave the world spreadsheets and guilt.
Climate’s broken story:
Let’s be honest:
We made climate a moral burden.
We told people they were the problem.
We hit them with complex policy terms and graphs.
And we sold a future of less.
Less flying.
Less meat.
Less fun.
That’s not a movement. That’s a funeral.
So what now?
We don’t need to beat AI.
We need to learn from it.
If we want to win this narrative decade, we need a new script.
Try this:
Create our own arms race
“If we don’t lead the energy transition, someone else will. And they’ll own the 21st century economy.”
Make it feel personal
Less carbon jargon.
More stories about cleaner air, food on the table, and jobs that don’t kill the planet.
Celebrate the builders
Founders in this space aren’t “eco-entrepreneurs.”
They’re rebuilding the world. Frame it that way.
Use sharper, stickier lines
No one repeats a paragraph.
They repeat a sentence.
Say something worth echoing.
Bottom line:
AI didn’t win because it matters more.
It won because its storytellers played the game better.
They spoke to power, fear, and hope.
Let’s make climate the most exciting story on the planet.
Because it is.
We just haven’t told it right.
Yet.

I would argue that AI also "won" because of two major breakthroughs, the transformers paper in 2017 and ChatGPT launch in 2022.
What have we accomplished on climate and technological standpoint for the past 10, 15 or 20 years ?
I am still waiting for nuclear fusion ....
As long that we don't have compelling concrete solutions to offer, it's going to be hard to offer a compelling story in climate
Last I remember no one has asked us if we wanted AI. It had been rammed down our throats and in our lives by the minority extremely wealthy control freaks. Climate on the other hand was not adopted because “they” holding the purse strings were not interested. They did not see how they could make their greedy billions from us dealing with that. This has been my experience
