In Canada cleantech investments are primarily in software. Itβs very difficult to get attention or funding for anything hardware related, which is a huge miss. I hope more investors see the value of hardware when it comes to sustainability tools and more value in put on hardware solutions.
We're actually looking at 2 Canadian hardware climate startups. Just closed our latest investment there into Anodyne Chemistries. Momentum isn't great but the best cases still manage to find capital, mostly outside of Canada.
You might want to check CERT Systems as well, they're doing a great job.
Thatβs great! Iβve worked on both sides of it. From the start-up and venture side. In both cases Canada was a tough market. Large institutional lenders arenβt interested in hardware plays and there is a serious lack of pre-seed/seed funding here for hardware tech. Most start-ups in Canada (seed) look to the USA. Sadly there remains a serious lack of early venture funding for innovation here.
True. That lack of early stage funding is notorious in Canada and has unfortunately been the case for decades. Luckily you have smart founders and an immediate access to the US. In my time in SF, I was impressed by the number of sharp Canadian founders able to rapidly scale organizations.
I really liked the exercise at the end of the video ππ»
